Bolivia is the Western
hemisphere's highest, most isolated and most rugged nation. The airport
at La Paz is over 13,000 feet in altitude, so if you are traveling there
be ready for the effects of altitude Its actually the highest airports
in the World. Bolivia is among the world's hottest and coldest, windiest
and steamiest spots. It has the driest, saltiest and swampiest natural
landscapes on the Earth.
Bolivia has everything except for beaches. It actually does have a Navy that patrols Lake Titicaca. This is a hold over from the Pacific War when in the late 19th Century Bolivia and Peru went to War with Chile. Prior to that Arica (now Chile) was a Bolivian city on the Pacific Coast. They lost the war and the city and their only access to the Ocean. Bolivia boasts the soaring peaks of the Andes Cordillera around Sorato the hallucinogenic salt flats of Uyuni, the steamy jungles of the Amazon Basin and wildlife-rich grasslands of the Southeast. Its beauty is reflected in its vibrant indigenous cultures, colonial cities such as Sucre and Potosi and traces still left of Incas and other civilizations long past. Attractions: Bolivia attracts visitors for cultural and scenic opportunities But while most travelers stick to the well-worn paths of the Altiplano, there's plenty to be found elsewhere, including the tropical east and the lowland regions in the south. Electric current: is 220 V 60 cycles so if you want to use your US hair dryer you will need a converter that most hotels can provide. Transportation: Internationally
there are only a few airlines offering direct flights to Bolivia, so air
fares are as high as the altitude. There are direct services between most
major South American cities as well as from Miami. The international entry
cities are Santa Cruz and La Paz.
Documentation: Entering
Bolivia for most international passengers is pretty easy. It requires a
passport and an additional form of identification like a driver's license.
However, check with the airline of your choice to make sure you are prepared.
Weather: The most popular travel period to Bolivia is June to mid Spetember, This is also when most of the Bolivian festivals are held. Festivals noted for their color and excitement, not to be missed. However remember that Bolivia has a very large diversity of geography from swamps to the heights of the Andes so while is may be chilly in Lapaz, Santa Cruz may be very warm. Spanish is of course the main language and except for the more upscale commercial areas and hotels English is not often found. |
